Balance is a State of Mind
Life feels out of balance. All I do is work. There isn’t enough time for (fill in the blank). Sound familiar?
You are not alone.
I’ve been pushing this blog off for about two months now because I didn’t feel like I should be writing about balance when I couldn’t seem to find it myself. Then I remembered, balance wasn’t achieved when I crossed all the things on my to-do list off. Balance is a state of mind and is constantly changing based on your priorities.
There is always going to be something that needs your attention. The question is where are you willing to direct your attention when you are bombarded with distractions?
It doesn’t have to be time in equal parts, rarely can it be. Sometimes it’s as simple as putting yourself on your own agenda and shifting your perspective on what you are choosing to fill your schedule up with. That’s right, you’ve chosen this and may not even have realized it. It’s easy to find yourself going through the motions and saying yes to this and that. And before you know it, you’re doing all of these things that keep you away from what lights you up. Sometimes it makes you forget what that even was.
That’s where leadership comes in. Where can you take responsibility for the way you experience the world?
For me, it started with the purchase of a new planner – The Desire Map Planner by Danielle LaPorte. While some days it becomes a thing I have to do, it tends to shift my thinking of what will I do to feel the way I want to feel. That requires knowing how you want to feel, which requires slowing down enough to listen to that little heart of yours and asking it. Then instead of focusing on those big, bright shiny to-do’s, you focus on the things that will allow you to feel the way you want to feel.
Maybe it’s simply going for a walk, connecting with a friend or family member or even spending 15 minutes coloring – it can be anything. Start with a nice deep breath. Ask yourself how you want to feel and notice how you feel when you focus on the feeling.
